When opportunity knocks, grab your chance!

Have you been told to make hay while the sun shines? Many of us may not know what that even means. We’re not farmers why should we make hay? What does sunshine has to do with this? These are the list of questions that strike our mind. How can this be related to grabbing opportunities?

So before understanding this lets understand what “Making hay while the sun shines” means. Making hay while the sun shines is considered as good advice. If you make hay while Sun shines means you take the advantage of chance to do something while conditions are good. In other words you make good use of your time or make most of an opportunity while you have the chance.

Hundreds of years ago it would take many days for Farmers to cut, dry and gather hay. Today, it’s much easier due to developed technology. Since hay can be ruined easily if it gets wet. So the farmers used to take advantage of sunny weather and thus make hay while sun shines was just matter of common sense to them. They eventually began to use the phrase generally means to take advantage of opportunities before the chance slips away. Opportunities may only come along every so often.

There is time for everything, there is time for students to study, time for Traders to trade, workers to work. A job done at the right time is always useful; those who miss a favorable chance have to repent.

The door of opportunity is always open, but nobody bothers to push the door open. They just get tired out by knocking and then they leave. Sometimes we can make our own opportunities, sometimes we can see them coming, but more often than not they are like pop quizzes, they are sprung on you like a challenge to test your skills, almost like a dare to see if you can take that leap of faith to make whatever it is a success. Wait too long and an excellent opportunity might slip away.

For instance, during my school days we had 4 houses namely sapphire, topaz, ruby, and emerald. When I was in class 7th we had selections for house captains. We were told that anyone can participate and there would be a personality test for the same. Initially I was a bit hesitant and lacked self confidence but then I started asking myself, why am I hesitating? Why do I have self doubt? Why am I thinking of failure? And the answer of this question I can give this a try and so I participated and eventually got selected as the vice captain of my house. It was when I first learned the importance of grabbing opportunity when it knocks you. It is rightly said by Idowu Koyenikan “Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.”

Whatever you do, do it with purpose. Being focused is not something to be ashamed of. It is something to be proud of. When you know what you are doing and have a clear vision of where you are going, you will not need to chase opportunities. Opportunities will seek you. Happiness will chase you. And, instead of being a choice, you will be the one choosing.

I would suggest when life presents opportunities we must seize them and not let them go. Future is uncertain. We get chances with limited validity to time. The world has become an intensely complete place, people have to create a place for themselves, so one should not ignore opportunities and wait for the next one.

One must always “strike when the iron is hot”.
